Help Desk

Anche se all'inizio c'e' stato qualche "inefficienza", devo dire che ora l'help desk di Marvell funziona bene.
Stamattina ho trovato questo messaggio sulla tastiera. Per la cronaca, non ho avuto alcun problema.

Although, at the beginning, there was some problem, now the help desk service is working pretty well here at Marvell. This morning I found this messagge on my keybord. And everything was correctly set.

Dolcetti

La mamma di Colin e' una persona straordinaria, e gentilissima. Rivederla e' stato molto bello; ed altrettanto bello e' stato conoscere il suo papa', che non era venuto in Italia. Sfortunatamente mi sono dimenticato di scattare loro una foto.
Non ho purtroppo conosciuto la nonna, che pero' e' stata di una gentilezza commovente; tanto da prepararmi degli straordinari dolcetti (di ricetta originale tedesca); quelli che vedete nella foto (sono otto, o almeno, erano otto quando ho scattato la foto.....)

Here you can see the picture of the extraordinary cakes that Colin's grandmother prepared for me. I didn't meet her, but she gave me this lovely present through Kuniko, Colin's mother. It has been very touching.
Unfortunately I didn't take a picture during the dinner, but I hope to meet again Colin's parents. They are very nice people (as Colin, by the way).

Berkeley e Colin

Oggi sono tornato a Berkeley. Nel primo pomeriggio sono stato con Luns a zonzo (Berkeley e' sempre affascinante; la gente e' allegra e "colorata" e per strada si vede di tutto, come ad esempio questo monitor che abbiamo trovato su un marciapiede, con il cartello "gratis, funziona"). Poi alle cinque avevo appuntamento con Colin.
In attesa della cena, siamo andati un po' in giro, abbiamo mangiato un buonissimo gelato al gusto arancio/zafferano, siamo andati da Laura (sua amica che gia' avevo conosciuto a Pavia) e poi abbiamo cenato assieme ai genitori di Colin in un ottimo ristorante ad Albany.
Rivedere la mamma di Colin e conoscere suo papa' e' stato davvero emozionante. Ed abbiamo trascorso insieme una bellissima serata.

Today, in the afternoon, I went to Berkeley, a lovely place where I spent a beautiful experience seven years ago. I first met my friend Luns, and at 5, I met Colin (see picture).
With him I ate a very good (and strange) saffron & orange ice cream, we walked in a lovely neighbor (Rockridge) where we met Laura, a Colin's friend I already knew when she come to Pavia.
Then we went for dinner in a lovely restaurant, together with Colin's parents. It was exciting to see again Kumiko, his mother, and to meet his father. And the food was vey good too.

Rassegna gastronomica

Ieri, come tradizione, siamo andati a mangiare in uno dei ristoranti che aderiscono alla rassegna gastronomica del Lodigiano. Ecco il menù. Come si può leggere, non ci siamo fatti mancare proprio nulla. Peccato che Enrico non abbia potuto essere con noi…

Yesterday, honouring a good family tradition, we ate in one of the restaurants adhering to the “Lodi food tasting session”. As you can see, the chosen menu was really yummy. Poor Enrico, he could not join us…

Riso Beretta

Anche se puo' sembrare pubblicita' occulta, mi permetto di postare la foto del Riso Beretta, che ho trovato in vendita al Safeway. La cosa buffa e' che e' proprio il riso proveniente dalla provincia di Pavia.
Ora se fossi capace potrei cucinarmi degli ottimi risotti....
P.S. Non so quanto costi in Italia, qui 4.95 alla confezione.

Although it looks like an advertisement, I post here a picture of "Riso Beretta" a brand of rice coming from Pavia. I found it at Safeway.
Now, if I would be able, I could cook some great "risotto".....
P.S. I don't know how much does it cost in Italy, but hopefully less than 4.95 $

Toyota Yaris

Come forse sapete (o forse no), la mamma e la sorella di Silvia hanno da poco comprato una Toyota Yaris grigia metallizzata. Cosi' quando oggi sono uscito e ho visto parcheggiata davanti a casa una Toyota Yaris (che qui non e' molto diffusa) pensavo che fossero venute a trovarmi in macchina...

As probably you know (or probaly you don't), Silvia's mother and sister recently bought a brand new Toyota Yaris. So, when today I have seen the same car (that here is not so common, because it is too small for USA style) parked in front of my place, I was thinking that they came here by car to meet me.

Ciclista lavoratore

Dopo i primi tentativi un po' titubanti, ormai ho preso l'abitudine di andare al lavoro in bici. Marvell dista da qui circa 5 miglia, ma di strada molto trafficata. Allungando un po' il tragitto e' possibile pero' trovare un percorso quasi completamente ciclabile, anche se con qualche passaggio critico (ad esempio il cavalcavia sulla 101 della Great America Parkway).

After some hesitation, I started to ride my bike (that is the Ale's and Emiko's bike, by the way) up to Marvell site. The distance is about 5 mile, but through a very crowded and dangerous way. With the help of Luns I found a different way, a little bit longer, but safer. Almost everywhere there is a bike lane, with the exception of some critical point. But paying attention, it is safe enough. Here you can see some pictures.

Bicicletta + San Francisco

Ecco la prima foto della bicicletta che gentilmente Ale ed Emiko mi hanno "prestato"...
Oggi l'ho inaugurata andando a San Francisco col mitico Caltrain. Anche qui, come a Pavia, la giornata era splendida...

Here you can see the picture of the bike that Ale and Emiko "gave" me to be used in this period. It looks pretty nice and today we went to San Francisco (with the Caltrain) and we rode through the beautiful city.

Autunno a Pavia

Oggi, approfittando della bella e fredda giornata, ho girovagato qua e là per Pavia e ho avuto la possibilità di apprezzare un po’ di bei colori autunnali. In realtà invidio moltissimo Enrico che si sta godendo lo splendido clima californiano e quindi, per non deprimermi troppo al pensiero del freddo inverno, mi sto circondando di tanti bei fiorellini che mettono allegria.

Today has been a wonderful sunny and cold day and I’ve decided to go out for a walk in Pavia where I’ve had the possibility to appreciate beautiful autumn colours. To be sincere, I envy Enrico a lot because of the warm temperatures of California so, to cheer me up when I think to the coming winter, I’ve bought some nice flowers.

Panettone

Oggi pomeriggio sono stato con il buon Marco a zonzo per la Silicon Valley. Siamo stati cosi' al Mountain ViewShoreline park; la giornata, come vedete, era fantastica. Tornando a casa ci siamo fermati da Costco, una specie di supermercato/grossista che offre parecchie cose interessanti. Notevoli alcuni prodotti italiani, tra cui il classico panettone, come potete vedere dalla foto.

Today, in the afternoon, with my friend Marco, we went to Mountain View (the google's place) and in particular we visited the Shoreline park. Wheater was pretty good, as you can see.Coming back we stopped at Costco, a very big store selling also good italian groceries, like the panettone you can see in the picture.

Materasso di cortesia

Appena comperato, il materasso di Enrico ha dato segni di cedimento per cui, essendo ancora in garanzia, abbiamo reclamato presso la ditta produttrice. In attesa che la riparazione sia completa, lo hanno sostituito con un "materasso di cortesia". Peccato che sia un po' troppo corto...

Just after being bought, Enrico's mattress showed some problems, so, since it is still in escrow, we called the manufacturer to make it mended. Since they are fixing it, they have replaced our mattress with a "courtesy" one. The problem is that it is thicker and shorter than the other...

Peppermill

Questo e' un post molto specifico che solo Davide e Martjee, oltreche' Silvia, potranno apprezzare. Oggi pomeriggio, accompagnando Marco ed Anna in un centro commerciale, siamo entrati in un negozio di articoli per la casa. E indovina un po' di che marca erano i macina pepe esposti? Col cambio favorevole, quasi quasi conviene comprarli qui...

This is a post that only Davide and Martjee, and obviously Silvia, could appreciate. This afternoon, going with Marco and Anna to a mall, we visited a home-furnishings store. And, as you can see in the picture, which is the brand name of the pretty cool pepper mills?

Casa e auto

Eccon alcune foto della casetta dove sono alloggiato e dell'auto con cui mi muovo (ma quanto prima, grazie a Magnamotto, potro' pedalare come ai vecchi tempi). Il posto e' carino, molto ben curato. E l'auto, pur non essendo una Ferrari, e pur non riscontrando l'entusiasmo del buon Billa (e' un po' scarna la dotazione, non ha ne' chiusura centralizzata ne' alzacristalli elettrici) svolge egregiamente la sua funzione.

Here you can see the community where I'm living, and the "Marvell" car. The place is nice, very quiet. And the car is good enough, although my friend Billa is a little bit critical because of the lack of a lot of optionals.
However pretty soon I will be able to ride again, thanks to the bike provided by Magnamotto.

Francobolli

Oggi sono andato all'ufficio postale per comprare dei francobolli. Senza fare particolari richieste, mi hanno dato dei bellissimi francobolli che riproducono fumetti della Marvel (non Marvell). Che coincidenza...

Today I went to the post office to buy stamps... I didn't ask particular stamps, but I received quite nice stamps with Marvel (not Marvell) cartoons.
I don't know if you can recognize it in the picture...

Head quarter

Qui la sede principale (head quarter) di Marvell e' abbastanza impressionante.
Appare come un campus, costituito da 6 grandi palazzi. La cosa interessante e' che ci sono, oltre agli uffici e alle meeting room, anche due ristoranti, due "bar", un campo da beach-volley, un campo da basket, e una palestra. Il tutto a disposizione (gratis) per il buon dipendente.
Tra le peculiarita', all'ingresso un acquario che non sfigurerebbe a Genova (un po' meglio di quello dell'ST a Castelletto), e vicino al mio cubicle, una "quiet room", stanza dove il progettista puo' ritirarsi per trovare la serenita' e la tranquillita'...

Here, the Marvell's head-quarter is quite impressive. It is like a campus, with 6 main buildings. The nice thing is that there are no only offices or meeting rooms, but also two good restaurants, two "Cafe'", a beach-volley and a basketball court, and a gym. On tuesday, moreover, there is soccer match between employees. As italian (and as world champion), I'm supposed to be a great player... and next tuesday I will have to demonstrate this.
At the main entrance there is a big lobby, with a great acquarium (much better of the one in ST at Castelletto and comparable to the one in Genova). Moreover, close to my cubicle, there is a funny "quiet room" where one is supposed to find quiet to relax...

Pumpkins

Eccomi con il primo post dalla Califonia. I primi giorni sono trascorsi in modo tranquillo, in compagnia di amici, Marco e Anna, che abitano qui vicino, e i mitici Ale ed Emiko (Magnamotto) che comunque abitano a poca distanza.

Here my first post from California. The first days have been quite good. I spent the first weekend together with my friends Marco and Anna (they live at about 1 mile from here) and with Ale and Emiko (the famous Magnamotto).
Halloween is still far, however pumpkins are everywhere.

Festicciola prima di partire

Ormai mancano pochi giorni alla partenza di metà dei sacchibelli (la componente sacchi) per la California, per motivi di lavoro.
Così ieri, Silvia, Luisa e la mitica Mutz hanno organizzato una graditissima festicciola.

The sacchi side of sacchibelli blog is ready to fly to California (for business, as I'm supposed to answer when someone, at the custom, will ask to me why I'm entering in the Unites States of America). The marabelli side of sacchibelli is not so happy (because she will stay in Italy) but together with Luisa and the "Mutz", they organized a little party. Here you can see the pictures.

Muffins

Forse per rendere meno traumatico, dal punto di vista gastronomico, la mia imminente spedizione in California, oggi Silvia ha preparato degli straordinari muffins alle mele e cannella. Anche se sono 12, sono tutti per noi, a meno che qualcuno non passi a trovarci...

Grazie Ivan

Lo scorso venerdì abbiamo avuto Ivan a cena da noi. Anche se non ci ha permesso di fargli una foto per il blog, qui potete vedere due splendidi omaggi che ci ha portato, dal suo recente viaggio in Corsica. Un buonissimo "Muscat de cap corse" e una eccezionale marmellata di fichi interi. Da mangiare, quest'ultima, con uno straordinario formaggio di capra, che pero' non abbiamo fatto tempo a fotografare (coì come l'ottimo lonzu)

Last friday we had Ivan at our place for a dinner. Although he didn't allow me to take a picture of him for the blog, here you can see two gifts he brought us from his last trip to Corse. A wonderful "confiture of figues entiers" and a lovely "Muscat de cap corse". Moreover he brought also some "lonzu" and a very good "fromage of chevre", to be eaten with the confiture of figues. Unfortunately we ate it too fastly, and there was no time for a picture.

Festa di addio in ST

Anche se un po' in ritardo, ecco il post relativo alla festicciola di addio ai colleghi ST. Grazie a Silvia, che ha preparato qualche stuzzichino, dolce e salato, la festicciola, anche se un po' mi sono commosso, è stata molto bella. Tra l'altro ho ricevuto due bellissimi regali.... un telefonino Sony Ericsson (Z610) e un router ADSL wireless Netgear. Ancora una volta grazie a tutti gli amici/colleghi che ho lasciato. E grazie per il bellissimo biglietto che accompagnava i due regali...

Silvia prepared some nice things as appetizer (picture) and I received two wonderful gifts, a new cellular phone (SonyEricsson Z610) and a new wireless router (Netgear).

Ericini

Due nostri cari amici, Beatrice e Raffaele, ci hanno omaggiato di uno splendido piatto, fatto e dipinto a mano, a Valderice, in provicia di Trapani.
Inoltre il piatto era pieno di dolci detti "ericini", fatti con marzapane e assolutamente straordinari. Sono preparati nel convento della Badia, a Erice, da suore di clausura.
Se pensate di passare da casa nostra nelle prossime ore, potreste essere fortunati e trovarne ancora qualcuno. Ma non tardate troppo....

Two friends of us, Beatrice and Raffaele, offered us a wonderful dish (hand made and hand paint, from Sicily), full of crazy "Ericini", delicious pastry based on "marzapane". Their origin is from the "Convento della Badia".
If you plan to visit us in the next few hours you could be lucky and find something to eat. But if you will arrive late....

Corsica

Viaggio in Provenza

Eccoci finalmente a descrivere una nuova vacanza che abbiamo organizzato in questa ultima settimana di agosto. In 5 giorni, dal 23 al 28, abbiamo fatto un bellissimo tour, in auto, per la Provenza, con alcune puntate anche in Camargue, Linguadoca e una misteriosa tappa a Triora, in Liguria. Assieme a noi, anche la mitica cognata Luisa, fida compagna di vacanze, fin dallo scorso anno.

- 23/08/2007: Pavia -> Nizza -> Grasse

Grasse è un bel paesino, arroccato su un colle a pochi chilometri dalla Costa Azzurra. E' famoso soprattutto per le industrie del profumo, che qui hanno le loro basi. In questa foto uno scorcio del centro, con la Chiesa e la torre medievale.

La sua arena romana, molto ben conservata, è splendida, ma certo non è l'unica attrattiva di Arles. Ecco una foto notturna del gruppo. Sullo sfondo la celebre arena.

Sia Aigues Mortes che Les S. Maries de la mer sono due posti splendidi, anche se molto differenti. Nella foto le imponenti mura medievali che circondano, integralmente, Aigues Mortes.

A parte qualche intoppo legato a un problema coi documenti di identità il viaggio è stato bello ed emozionante, con l'ultima notte trascorsa a Triora, bellissimo borgo ligure celebre per gli episodi di stregoneria risalenti alla fine del XVI secolo.

We spent the last 5 days, since August the 23rd through august the 28th traveling. Together with Luisa, the famous sister in law who already spent some days in vacation last year with us in Umbria, we went to Provence, a very nice region in the south of France. These were the stops we did during the travel, while for the pictures, see the italian version. I hope that Emiko will believe that this has been a real travel, and not a dream of our fantasy :-)

P.S. Triora is most famous "witches" place in Italy. It is linked with Salem in Massachusets. I have been there with two witches (Silvia and Luisa), and I have to confirm that the place is wonderful.

Conta family

Sacchibelli e Conta family eccezionalmente riuniti per mangiare un ottimo gelato di medusa e squalo (alias, pesca e fior di latte). Ecco la foto di gruppo.

Sacchibelli and Conta family have exceptionally met each other to eat a wonderful jelly fish and shark ice cream (in reality it was peach and cream). Here you can see the group picture.

La ricetta di Emiko

Seguendo i suggerimenti inviatici da oltre-oceano da Emiko, Silvia ha preparato una straordinaria torta di ricotta. La potete ammirare nella foto. La cosa buffa è che la ricetta è italiana, ma a noi è arrivata dalla California, tramite la mitica Emiko, la nostra amica giapponese. Prodigi del mondo globale....

Following the Emiko's suggestions, Silvia prepared a wonderful "torta di ricotta". You can see it in the picture. The funny thing is that the recipe is Italian (from Gargano, in particular) but we received it from South Bay, California, through Emiko, our japanese friend. What a global world....

Autoradio

Dopo anni di lotta con l'autoradio (marchiata Peugeot, ma in realtà una Blaupunkt) che non ha mai funzionato sulla nostra Peugeot 206, siamo riusciti a smontarla e sabato abbiamo comprato una nuova autoradio Sony.
L'abbiamo installata senza particolari problemi, e funziona benissimo. Eccola nella foto.

After a long fight against the old car radio (a Blaupunkt with the Peugeot brand name) that never worked fine, at the end we decided to buy a new one (a Sony). We had some trouble trying to uninstall the old one, but at the end everything was great, and now we can travel listening good music.

Cestini di cioccolato

Anche se non è proprio la stagione più indicata Silvia si è esibita nei "cestini di cioccolato", dei dolcetti di cioccolato ripieni di crema al marsala. Semplicemente straordinari. Peccato che voi possiate solo vederli in foto, mentre io me ne sono gustati un sacco.

Although it is not the perfect season to do them, Silvia today prepared wonderful "cestini al cioccolato", small chocolat cups filled with marsala cream. They were very good. Unfortunately you can only see them in the picture, while I have eated a lot of them...

Taverna Santorini

Ieri sera siamo stati alla "Taverna Santorini", un nuovo ristorante greco in via del Carmine 4/a, a Pavia.
Il posto è piccolo ma caratteristico, e il personale molto simpatico e professionale. E soprattutto, il cibo è ottimo (a prezzi onesti). Abbiamo infatti mangiato Souvlaky e Mousaka, oltre al Gyros e al mitico yogurt miele e noci. Il tutto accompagnato da ottima birra greca.

Yesterday we went to "Taverna Santorini", a new greek restaurant in via del Carmine 4/a, at Pavia.
The restaurant is small, but quite interesting, and the waiter and waitress were very kind explaining the characteristics of greek food. We have eaten souvlaky and mousaka, together with gyros and yogurt with honey and nuts. And we drunk a lot of greek beer.
