Primavera

Il freddo inverno sembra ormai alle spalle, e le giornate cominciano a scaldarsi anche qui a Pavia. Inoltre qualche fiore è comparso nel nostro appartamento, segno che la primavera è ormai alle porte. E questo ci rende particolarmente felici.

Weather is getting better and better here in Pavia too, and not only in California. Moreover some flowers appeared in our apartments. Spring time is coming, and this makes us happy.

Colazione + Pranzo

Domenica scorsa la colazione è stata particolarmente abbondante. Oltre al classico yogurt, caffe latte con biscotti e spremuta, per una congiuntura particolarmente favorevole hanno trovato posto sulla tavola sia l'ottima cassata della signora Beatrice (di cui al post precedente) che i buonissimi bagels preparati da Silvia. Si respirava aria di Sicilia per la cassata e la spremuta, e aria New Yorkese per i bagels.
A pranzo invece siamo passati al menù giapponese, con un delicato "chicken with soy and balsamic dressing" accompagnato da insalata di daykon e carote, oltre all'immancabile riso coi piselli. Il tutto gustato facendo uso dei terribili chopstick.

Last sunday breakfast was particularly huge. As usual we had yogurt, caffelatte with cookies and orange juice. But there was room also both for "cassata" (from Beatrice) and bagels (from Silvia). This kind of mixture between sicily and new yourk was great.
At lunch, we switched to japanese, with "chicken with soy and balsamic dressing", together with rice and beans and a salad with daykon and carrots. I think Emiko should appreciate this.

Cassata

Come l'anno scorso anche quest'anno il gentilissimo Colonnello e la sua eccezionale moglie Beatrice ci hanno omaggiato di una straordinaria cassata preparata proprio dalla signora Beatrice. Ci mancano le parole per descriverla, per cui lascio lo spazio alle foto. E' semplicemente il dolce che piu' ci piace in assoluto. Qualcuno sostiene che sia ipercalorica, ma noi pensiamo siano bugie. E' solo buonissima :-)
Sfido gli amici californiani a trovare un dolce altrettanto buono...

This year too our friend colonel and his wife Beatrice gave us an extraordinary "cassata" hand made by Beatrice herself. Absolutely it is the kind of dessert that we prefer and we are very excited because of this gift. We don't have words to explain our excitement, so we leave room the the pictures. Someone think that "cassata" has too many calories, but we think this is not true. It is just very good. I'm not sure our californian friends will be able to find something so good around their place...

Merenda

Questo pomeriggio abbiamo avuto ospiti a casa nostra, per una merenda, Carlo, Susana e la piccola Marina, Chiara e Fernando.
La merenda e' stata eccezionale, non solo per l'abbondanza di dolci (una torta di mele, un tiramisu', cioccolatini, cuneesi, biscotti e tartufi...) ma anche per il piacevole clima che si e' instaurato.
La piccola Marina ha dormito per la prima parte del pomeriggio, ma nella seconda parte e' stata la protagonista indiscussa, con i suoi sorrisi e la sua straordinaria espressivita'. Nella foto è con Fernando che, inutilmente, cerca di nascondersi per non essere pubblicato sul blog.

This afternoon we had Carlo, Susana and little Marina, together with Chiara and Fernando at our place for a tea.
We didn't drink only a cup of tea, by the way. In fact there were a lot of desserts: we started with apple cake and "tiramisù", then we had some nice "tartufi" hand made by Silvia, together with cookies and chocolate candies. It was very nice to talk each other about every kind of topic, while eating so nice and sweet things.
Marina was sleeping on the sofa, at the beginning. But then she wake up and she was pretty nice and funny. In the picture she is with Fernando, who uselessy tries not to appear in our blog.

Primavera

Benche' siamo ancora a inizio febbraio, oggi anche a Pavia si respirava aria di primavera.
Una bella giornata di sole, il cielo sereno e blu, e i primi fiori che cominciano a colorare un po' l'ambiente. E poi, oltre ai fiori veri (nella foto le nostre primule), grazie a Silvia a volte fioriscono fiori non solo belli, ma anche buoni. Cosi' stamattina sono "fioriti" in cucina le "margheritine" di Stresa...

Although we are always in winter time, today it was a sunny day here in Pavia, and we realized that spring-time is not that far. You can see, in the picture, our primroses. And tulips are coming soon. Waiting for tulips, this morning some nice "margheritine" di Stresa cookies appeared in the kitchen... Thanks Silvia.

The linux victory

Ieri sera Paolo e Rosy sono venuti a cena da noi; la serata è stata oltremodo piacevole, sia per la l'amicizia che ci lega ai nostri ospiti che per la loro simpatia. La cena inoltre e' stata decisamente "ottima e abbondante". Ma l'apice della serata si è raggiunto con il peraltro atteso trionfo di Linux. L'ing. Vilmercati infatti si è presentato a casa nostra con la sua webcam Philips, sfidandomi a farla funzionare sotto Linux (credo che abbia passato delle notti insonni per cercare di farla funzionare invano, e la cosa lo ha indisposto verso il sistema operativo del futuro....)·
Ebbene, dopo aver dapprima comunicato via Skype con Gianfry e Anna (nonostante il loro lacunoso PC Windows), il trionfo si è raggiunto quando, una volta attaccata la webcam Philips al nostro PC, quasi per magia ha funzionato praticamente al primo colpo...

Yesterday Paolo and Rosy came at our place for a dinner. We spent together a lovely evening, both because of the food (thanks to Silvia) and because we are true friends each other.
Although the dinner was great, the top of the evening was reached thanks to Linux.
First we tried to skype Gianfry and Anna using my laptop running Ubuntu Gutsy Ribbon, but we had some problem to establish the communication. The nice thing was that the fault was from Gianfry and Anna side (they are using a primitive Windows Xp operating system).
Then Paolo tried to demonstrate that Linux was unable to work with his webcam Philips (he spent few nights without sleeping trying to figure out how to run his webcam under linux, and he concluded that Windows is better). However I just plugged his webcam in my PC and it worked almost "out of the box".

Teriyaki hamburger with green tea rice

Stasera Silvia si e' esibita nella prima ricetta tratta dal libro di cucina giapponese che le ho regalato per il suo compleanno.
E i risultati sono stati eccellenti. Il teriyaki hambuerger, accompagnato da riso al green tea e verdure era delizioso. E abbiamo mangiato tutto ovviamente con i chopstik. Emiko sarebbe orgogliosa.

This evening Silvia cooked her first japanese recipe, taken from the "Harumi's Japanese Home Cooking" book I bought for her birthday. Teriyaki hamburger with green tea rice was great and I hope she will cook soon new japanese recipes. And I'm sure Emiko would be proud of Silvia.
