Viaggio in Provenza

Eccoci finalmente a descrivere una nuova vacanza che abbiamo organizzato in questa ultima settimana di agosto. In 5 giorni, dal 23 al 28, abbiamo fatto un bellissimo tour, in auto, per la Provenza, con alcune puntate anche in Camargue, Linguadoca e una misteriosa tappa a Triora, in Liguria. Assieme a noi, anche la mitica cognata Luisa, fida compagna di vacanze, fin dallo scorso anno.

- 23/08/2007: Pavia -> Nizza -> Grasse

Grasse è un bel paesino, arroccato su un colle a pochi chilometri dalla Costa Azzurra. E' famoso soprattutto per le industrie del profumo, che qui hanno le loro basi. In questa foto uno scorcio del centro, con la Chiesa e la torre medievale.

La sua arena romana, molto ben conservata, è splendida, ma certo non è l'unica attrattiva di Arles. Ecco una foto notturna del gruppo. Sullo sfondo la celebre arena.

Sia Aigues Mortes che Les S. Maries de la mer sono due posti splendidi, anche se molto differenti. Nella foto le imponenti mura medievali che circondano, integralmente, Aigues Mortes.

A parte qualche intoppo legato a un problema coi documenti di identità il viaggio è stato bello ed emozionante, con l'ultima notte trascorsa a Triora, bellissimo borgo ligure celebre per gli episodi di stregoneria risalenti alla fine del XVI secolo.

We spent the last 5 days, since August the 23rd through august the 28th traveling. Together with Luisa, the famous sister in law who already spent some days in vacation last year with us in Umbria, we went to Provence, a very nice region in the south of France. These were the stops we did during the travel, while for the pictures, see the italian version. I hope that Emiko will believe that this has been a real travel, and not a dream of our fantasy :-)

P.S. Triora is most famous "witches" place in Italy. It is linked with Salem in Massachusets. I have been there with two witches (Silvia and Luisa), and I have to confirm that the place is wonderful.

Conta family

Sacchibelli e Conta family eccezionalmente riuniti per mangiare un ottimo gelato di medusa e squalo (alias, pesca e fior di latte). Ecco la foto di gruppo.

La ricetta di Emiko

Seguendo i suggerimenti inviatici da oltre-oceano da Emiko, Silvia ha preparato una straordinaria torta di ricotta. La potete ammirare nella foto. La cosa buffa è che la ricetta è italiana, ma a noi è arrivata dalla California, tramite la mitica Emiko, la nostra amica giapponese. Prodigi del mondo globale....

Following the Emiko's suggestions, Silvia prepared a wonderful "torta di ricotta". You can see it in the picture. The funny thing is that the recipe is Italian (from Gargano, in particular) but we received it from South Bay, California, through Emiko, our japanese friend. What a global world....

Autoradio

Dopo anni di lotta con l'autoradio (marchiata Peugeot, ma in realtà una Blaupunkt) che non ha mai funzionato sulla nostra Peugeot 206, siamo riusciti a smontarla e sabato abbiamo comprato una nuova autoradio Sony.
L'abbiamo installata senza particolari problemi, e funziona benissimo. Eccola nella foto.

After a long fight against the old car radio (a Blaupunkt with the Peugeot brand name) that never worked fine, at the end we decided to buy a new one (a Sony). We had some trouble trying to uninstall the old one, but at the end everything was great, and now we can travel listening good music.

Cestini di cioccolato

Anche se non è proprio la stagione più indicata Silvia si è esibita nei "cestini di cioccolato", dei dolcetti di cioccolato ripieni di crema al marsala. Semplicemente straordinari. Peccato che voi possiate solo vederli in foto, mentre io me ne sono gustati un sacco.

Although it is not the perfect season to do them, Silvia today prepared wonderful "cestini al cioccolato", small chocolat cups filled with marsala cream. They were very good. Unfortunately you can only see them in the picture, while I have eated a lot of them...

Taverna Santorini

Ieri sera siamo stati alla "Taverna Santorini", un nuovo ristorante greco in via del Carmine 4/a, a Pavia.
Il posto è piccolo ma caratteristico, e il personale molto simpatico e professionale. E soprattutto, il cibo è ottimo (a prezzi onesti). Abbiamo infatti mangiato Souvlaky e Mousaka, oltre al Gyros e al mitico yogurt miele e noci. Il tutto accompagnato da ottima birra greca.

Yesterday we went to "Taverna Santorini", a new greek restaurant in via del Carmine 4/a, at Pavia.
The restaurant is small, but quite interesting, and the waiter and waitress were very kind explaining the characteristics of greek food. We have eaten souvlaky and mousaka, together with gyros and yogurt with honey and nuts. And we drunk a lot of greek beer.

Da mamma ST.... all'uomo ragno

Ecco un post originale. Cambiamo argomento e parliamo della mia "sofferta" decisione lavorativa di abbandonare mamma ST (dopo otto anni e mezzo) per approdare alla corte ..... dell'Uomo Ragno, nome in codice della Marvell (con due l finali).
Lascio cari amici e colleghi, ma approdo in un gruppo fatto di persone che conosco bene. Speriamo che tutto fili per il meglio.

Here there is a new post, and the matter is original (no foods nor travels, but job).
At the end I decided to leave STM, the company I joined 8 years and a half ago, to join Marvell, an american company now based in Pavia too.
It was not easy to make this decision, but, at the end, I hope that this will be a good choice.

Ciao ciao Colin

Colin, il nostro amico-collega americano è ormai quasi pronto per rientrare negli States. Comincerà a studiare a New York, alla Columbia University, come Ph.D student. Ecco allora che per salutarlo abbiamo deciso di organizzare una piccola cena in suo onore. La serata, cui ha partecipato anche Luisa è stata più che piacevole, anche se bisogna ammettere che la partenza di Colin ci lascia un po' tristi. Per l'occasione abbiamo preparato antipasti misti, con torta di zucchine e spiedini di pomodoro e mozzarelline. Poi la classica pasta al pesto trapanese, una grigliata mista con insalata, l'immancabile gelato (questa volta alla pesca bianca) e, sul finire, a grande richiesta, la celebre granita al pompelmo rosa.

After one year spent in Italy Colin, our american friend and colleague is ready to come back to USA to start his Ph.D. at Columbia University. So we decided to organize a dinner with him (and with Luisa too). We started with various appetizers, then we switched to "pasta" with "pesto alla trapanese", then we had a mixed grill with salad, and to finish, after a little bit of cheese, we prepared both peach ice cream and home made "granita siciliana".
I'm sure we will miss him, but for sure, sometimes, he will fly back to Italy, at least to meet us and to enjoy of italian food.

Cena con Simo e Ale

Ieri sera è stata la volta di Simone e Alessandra. Piacevolissima serata trascorsa insieme intorno a una tavola ben imbandita. Purtroppo Silvia non mi autorizza ad elencare il menù, per cui mi limito a postare la classica foto di gruppo, con, in evidenza, la bottiglia di idrolitina e l'ottimo Bordeaux portato da Simone e Ale.

Yesterday we had a dinner, at our place, together with Simone and Alessandra. The dinner was very good (but Silvia does not allow to me to describe what we eaten), and we spent together a lovely evening. Here you can see the classic group picture, with, in evidence, the "idrolitina" water and the very impressive Bordeaux brougth by Simone and Ale.

Gita al mare!!!

Venerdì scorso abbiamo preferito fare una gita al mare invece di andare a lavorare...
Così, in stile molto olandese, siamo andati in bici in stazione, abbiamo preso il treno per Camogli e lì abbiamo passato la mattinata (nutrendoci esclusivamente di ottima focaccia). Ci siamo poi spostati, sempre in treno, a Santa Margherita Ligure, e da lì, in autobus, abbiamo raggiunto la bellissima, esclusiva e costosissima Portofino. La passeggiata fino al faro è stata particolarmente entusiasmante, anche grazie allo splendido sole e al bellissimo mare azzurro che ci circondava.

Last friday instead to go to work we preferred to go to the sea...
So, in a very dutch style, we went by bike to the railway station and then, by train, we reached Camogli. Here we spent all the morning and the lunch time (100% based on wonderful "focaccia"). Then we moved, always by train, to Santa Margherita Ligure and, by bus, to Portofino, very nice but very expensive. It was a beatiful sunny day, the blue sea was fantastic and we spent beatiful moments in that place.

Sartirana Lomellina e...

Oggi, assieme a Luisa, abbiamo trascorso la giornata a Sartirana Lomellina, paese di origine di Silvia. Il paesino, caratterizzato da un bellissimo castello (foto) è decisamente tranquillo, ma il pranzo è stato degno di nota. In particolare le celeberrime patatine fritte, anch'esse fotografate. La mamma di Silvia si è esibita in riso e fagioli, seguito da pollo in umido con patatine fritte. Il dolce è stato una straordinaria crostata con ricotta e cioccolato preparata da Silvia.

We spent the sunday in Sartirana Lomellina, the place where Silvia spent her childhood. The village is very quiet, but the castle (picture) is quite impressive. Silvia's mother cooked very good "riso e fagioli" and chicken "cacciatore" with exceptional "artigianal" french fries.
The dessert too was impressive, an hand made (by Silvia) crostata cake with ricotta and chocolate.

Torta con peperoni e melanzane

Questa mattina ci siamo esibiti nella preparazione di peperoni e melanzane in crosta di pane. La procedura è stata un po' laboriosa ma alla fine il risultato estetico (e non solo) è stato più che soddisfacente.

This morning we prepared a bread cake with pepper and eggplants. It has been a little bit complicated but, at the end, the cake was very good.

Pizza with Davide and Maartjie

Last sunday, after our travel to the Nederlands, we ate a pizza with Davide and his girlfriend Maartjie (who comes from Utrecht, NL) at our place. Then we had a pretty good "affogato al caffè" with our home-made ice cream and, at the hand, it was time for a picture.

Viaggio in Olanda

Since June the 7th through June the 12th we have spent our time in a wonderful trip to the Nederlands. We visited Amsterdam, a lovely and exciting place, full of culture, fun, transgression and bicycles. It was crazy for me to discover that there is a place in the world where bicycles dominate over cars...
Then we moved to Utrecht,

to meet our friend Mattia who is living there until next october. Although smaller, Utrecht is in some way similar to Amsterdam, with a lot of canals, historic buildings and nice place where to find good food and beer (we had a huge and wonderful dinner at "Mikonos", a Greek restaurant). People too is very lovely.
At the end we moved to Rotterdam, a completely different city, full of "original" architecture but poor of history because of World War II bombing.

However we found in Delfhaven (a neighborhood in the south west side of the city) a wonderful place where to spend the evening and to find extraordinary restaurants. In particular we suggest the libanese restaurant "Da Parel" and the Tapas Restaurant "Abrikoos", two lovely places where we found great mediterranean food.
We spent also some time around Rotterdam (in the Nederlands is quite easy to move around, although without a car). So we went by bus to Kinderdjik, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In Kinderdjik there are 19 beatiful windmills and it is one of the most suggestive sites we have ever visited.

The day after we went by train (trains in the Nederlands work perfectly, not like in Italy) to Delft, the Vermeer town.
This site is lovely, full of history and very quiet and relaxing. It is famous in the world for the hand painted blue and white ceramics; they are very nice, but very expensive too.

This travel has been quite cheap. We found a good flight with Easyjet, a low cost airline company flying from Malpensa (Terminal 2) to Amsterdam Schipol airport. It is sad for italians to make a comparison between the two airports. One, the italian one, is small, not easily connected with the city and in general poor of courtesy and informations. The other one (Schipol) is beatiful, full of shops and information with a very fast connection, by train, with the center of Amsterdam.

Cena con Repox e Laura

Ieri sera abbiamo avuto i freschi sposi Matteo (Repox) e Laura a cena. Dopo antipasti vari, gnocchetti sardi con sugo a base di speck e zafferano, involtini di vitello, gelato al fiordilatte con amarena e un'ottima torta (portata dagli ospiti) di pastafrolla con ricotta e cioccolato, ecco che riusciamo anche a fare un autoscatto.

Yesterday we had Matteo (Repox) and Laura at dinner. We started with appetizers and then we eated "gnocchetti sardi" with speck and saffron sauce, roulade of veal, black cherry ice cream and a very good cake short crust based with ricotta chese and chocolate. Then, we were able to take a picture of the group.

Pranzo domenicale

Questa domenica a pranzo sono venute Luisa, sorella di Silvia, nonchè mia cognata, con mamma Giovanna (è mia suocera, ma non ama il termine suocera...).
Così ecco una foto di gruppo, sempre con autoscatto, e un dettaglio sullo straordinario gelato di fragole (con decorazione di fragole), sempre fatto in casa.

On sunday we had Luisa (Silvia's sister and my sister in law) with her mam Giovanna (who is mam of Silvia too, obviously, and that is my mother in law, although she does not like this word).
So, here you can see a picture of us and a zoom of the wonderful "home made" strawberry ice-cream.

Cena con Luca e Teo

Mercoledi' sera abbiamo avuto ospiti a cena Luca e Teo. A parte la vittoria del Milan con la doppietta di Inzaghi, è stata una bellissima serata.
Dopo un po' di antipasti semplici, abbiamo preparato una pasta con pesto alla trapanese (pomodoro, basilico, noci, olio, aglio, sale, pepe + formaggio), una torta salata (con speck, formaggio e carciofi) e il celebre gelato al cioccolato.
Dopo non poche trattative il Dr. Malcovati ha concesso la liberatoria per la pubblicazione delle foto.

Last wednestay we had Luca and Teo at dinner. Unfortunately Milan won the Champions League final, but this was the only bad news of that day. After the appetizers, we preparaed a pasta with "trapanese pesto" sauce, made with tomatoes, basil, nuts, oil, garlic, salt, pepper and parmesan cheese), a quiche (with speck, cheese and artchokes) and the famous "home made" chocolat ice cream.

Bavarese

Come d'abitudine, ecco un dolcetto preparato da Silvia; trattasi di una bavarese di fragole, decorata con salsa (ovviamente a base di fragole).
Dolce fotogenico, ma anche molto gustoso. Peccato che voi non possiate assaggiarlo...

As usual, here you can see a wonderful strawberry bavarois with strawberry sauce. It looks pretty good, but I have to tell you that it is also pretty good :-)

Billa e Anna

Ieri sera Chicca e Andrea hanno organizzato, nella loro spledida casa, una festicciola per salutare Billa e Anna, di passaggio in Italia.
E' stata un'occasione per riunire, dopo tanto tempo, tanti amici, e per rivedere i due sposini americani.

Yesterday in the evening, Chicca and Andrea organized a dinner at their own place to say goodbye to Marco and Anna, now living in California, but that spent one holiday around Italy.
It has been a beatifull evening, because a lot of old friends came. Papaveri

Ecco una foto fatta nei pressi dell'ufficio dove lavoro. Solitamente e' un posto piuttosto desolato, ma la splendida fioritura di papaveri e il monte Rosa in lontananza rendono caratteristico anche questo posto.

Here you can find a picture taken close to the place where I'm working. In general it is a bare place, but the wonderfull poppies bloom and the monte Rosa far away make this place a little bit more interesting and peculiar

Oggi è il compleanno di Enrico; e Silvia ha preparato un'ottima "tarte au citron meringuée". L'aspetto forse è migliorabile, ma Enrico assicura che è squisita!!!

Pedale maiale 2007

In questi ultimi giorni il blog non è stato aggiornato causa mia assenza. Ero infatti impegnato nel tradizionale appuntamento ciclo-gastronomico del pedale-maiale. Quest'anno il giro è partito da Olbia (Sardegna), è proseguito per Santa Teresa di Gallura, quindi a Bonifacio. Da lì siamo ripartiti facendo poi tappa a Zonza. Terza tappa a Propiano, sempre in Corsica e quarta tappa ad Ajaccio.
Poi il rientro verso Porto Torres (in nave) visita a Sassari, e rientro in traghetto.
Per un totale di circa 380 km. Tutti pedalati.

In the last days the blog has not been updated because I was on holiday. Together with some friends (Pierre, Ivan, Davide and Paolo) we rode our mountain bikes through Sardegna and Corse. We started from Olbia and stopped in Bonifacio. Then we went to Zonza, to Propiano and we finished with Ajaccio. From Ajaccio we went back to Sardegna (Porto Torres), we visited Sassary and then came back to Pavia.

Il Papa a Pavia

Il week-end del 21/22 aprile è stato decisamente particolare per la città di Pavia. Il Papa, Benedetto XVI, è venuto in visita alla città, per rendere omaggio a Sant'Agostino, sepolto, come noto, all'interno della bellissima Chiesa di San Pietro in Ciel D'Oro.

This week-end the Pope, Benedetto XVI, has come to Pavia, to pray on S. Agostino's grave, in the beatiful church of San Pietro in Ciel D'Oro.

Primavera a Pavia

Anche se non possiamo competere con i posti esotici descritti da Ale ed Emiko, da Raffaele, da Teo e Vale, anche se le foto di Cesare sono decisamente più artistiche, anche a Pavia, in primavera, la natura riserva qualche meravigliosa sorpresa.

Although we cannot fight against the exotic places described in the blogs of our friends, in Pavia too, during spring time, it is possible to see some magic natural event. Here you can see the flowers in the "Castello Visconteo" park and in the "Cortile delle Magnolie", a beatiful corner of the historic University building.

Pasqua 2007

In occasione della Pasqua, abbiamo avuto i primi ospiti a pranzo nella nuova casetta. Assieme a Colin e Vahid (ed anche con Luisa) abbiamo trascorso una piacevolissima giornata. Nel nostro piccolo, aver vissuto momenti di gioia e serenità assieme ad amici che vengono da paesi così lontani (in ogni senso) e i cui "potenti" fanno di tutto per non andare d'accordo, vuole anche significare un messaggio di pace.

During Easter holidays we had the first guests at the new home, for lunch. Together with Colin and Vahid (and with Luisa too) we spent a beatiful day, full of peace and kindness. They come from two countries very different each other, but the nice experience we had together would like to be also a peace message.

Nuova casa operativa

Benchè il trasloco sia un'operazione piuttosto complicata, ha richiesto meno di 24 giorni. Purtroppo però la Telecom ci ha messo del suo, per cui solo ora siamo operativi anche dal punto di vista ADSL. E possiamo tornare ad aggiornare il blog.

Ecco una foto della sala, presa dalla stessa posizione di quella del 13 marzo. Qualche miglioramento è apprezzabile (almeno spero).

Although to move to a new house is quite complex, it didn't take 24 days. Unfortunately Telecom Italia didn't work very well and we received the ADSL in the new house only today. Eventually we can update our blog. Here there is a picture of the living room that you can compare with the one posted on March the 13rd (24 days ago). We hope that you can appreciate the improvements.
